Oh, my, can I even begin to verbalize how excited I am to have Magenta in her own building?  And can I even begin to fumble through the clumsy "thank you's" to everyone who helped make this possible.  

Is there any way to tell everyone how much I appreciate everything they've done for this company in the past few weeks?

*sigh*  Words fall way short of what I truly feel.

if i wrote a play....

If I were to write a brand new play, do you think anyone in the Magenta Family would direct it? Or is that too intimidating?  

I hope not.  I would love to have someone else interpret my work......

I'm encouraged

I entered "Sealegs!" into the 77th Annual Writer's Digest Writing Competition.  There were over 17,000 entries.  "Sealegs!" received an Honorable Mention in the Stage Play Script category.  I have a very nice certificate of achievement.....

I'm encouraged.  I should start writing again.....one day.

Dusting off the Cobwebs

It's true, I did proclaim I would be back. And look how long it's taken me!

I have been writing Callbacks......yes, doing what I'm supposed to be doing. LOL!

Maybe when the weather turns grim again I'll blog more. Sorry to everyone who was checking this daily. I feel as though I've let you down. But fear not....I will be back! REALLY!

Funny, but one of my lines in the play I'm in is exactly that. I'll be back.
But I don't get to say it humorously like I would LOVE to do. grrr!
Anyway, the play opens tomorrow, so once that's off and running I can be back onto this blog.

Writing "Callbacks"

The Bedlington Players presents Callbacks (for You’ve Got Nails)

(note: AD = Assistant Director)

PLAYWRIGHT: (enters cautiously) Hullo? Is there anyone here?
AD: (sitting at director’s table) Hi. Can I help you?
PLAYWRIGHT: I’m Felicity Bedlington. (pause) You know, the playwright.
AD: Ah, yes, yes. Felicity. Uh, were we expecting you?
PLAYWRIGHT: No. It’s a surprise.
AD: A surprise. Uh, I didn’t think we’d be seeing you until tech week.
PLAYWRIGHT: I know. But this is so exciting. How could I miss the auditions for a play I’ve written? It’s such a thrill.
AD: Ah, well, I guess so.
PLAYWRIGHT: I flew in. You know, from England.
AD: I bet you had to.
PLAYWRIGHT: I had mileage. ‘Managed to get a super duper cheap ticket. Couldn’t miss this, you know.
AD: This is so (struggles to find word) nice of you. I think.
PLAYWRIGHT: ‘Haven’t found a youth hostel or B&B yet. ‘Came straight from the airport.
AD: Ohhhh. I, uh, hope your flight was good.
PLAYWRIGHT: Rather! And….ta da! I brought the script.
AD: The script? We have the script already.
PLAYWRIGHT: Not this one, you don’t.
AD: You emailed it to Terry, the director, months ago. We’ve, uh, we’ve printed off enough copies for tonight
PLAYWRIGHT: Oh, dear. I hoped you hadn’t done that. You see, there have been a few changes. Not enough to alter the plot or anything.
AD: That’s good.
PLAYWRIGHT: I added a few new characters and changed the gender of some of the people – little things.
AD: Ms. Bedlington…
PLAYWRIGHT: Felicity! Call me Felicity.
AD: Felicity, we’ll use the script you gave us earlier, if that’s all right. And we can address the edits later.
PLAYWRIGHT: Yes, yes. Absolutely. Ripping, what? (laughs/snorts) Oh, and it’s now a musical. ‘So excited about this whole thing.
AD: What?
PLAYWRIGHT: Jolly fun, you know.
AD: No, no, the bit about the musical.
PLAYWRIGHT: Just a little musical. ‘Tried my hand at writing a few songs.
AD: A musical?
PLAYWRIGHT: Well, more like a play with music. ‘Just a few tunes.
AD: But we don’t have a musical director.
PLAYWRIGHT: Oh, not to worry. I brought along a CD. We can wing it.
AD: Excuse me, uh, I’m going to track down the rest of the crew. Why don’t you sit over there? (points to seat at the edge of stage) That way you’ll be able to see everything but won’t be, you know, in the way.
PLAYWRIGHT: Oh, rather. ‘Wouldn’t want to be in the way.
AD: I’ll be right back.
PLAYWRIGHT: And I’ll be quiet as a little mouse. You won’t even know I’m here.

Cosmopolitans

I learned how to make a cosmopolitan. Maybe I've been running in the wrong circles, but I'd never tried one of these wonderful cocktails before. The picture here isn't exactly a Cosmopolitan, but it's liquid. I figured it would be a good substitute.
And these particular drinks have cranberry juice in them, so they're bound to be healthy. Right? Now then, back to writing that script.

The weather is perfect for writing.

Ah, another day of perfect writing-weather. The skies are gloomy and gray, a slight drizzle is ensuring I don't have to go out and water my vegetable garden. All is well.

Last night at rehearsal, for a play I'm currently doing at another local theater company, I jotted down a few thoughts that I found funny. Perfect little musings for The Reds' Revenge. Not sure that's the final title, but it's a good working title for now.

I'm having fun exploring characters that were under-developed in the Purple play. And encouragement from a writing associate has refueled my interest in this project. Thank you DB!

Back to the keyboard.

Are you Published?

Are you published? I wish! I think that maybe once you get your foot in the door and get one play published that you're prone to feeling more positive about your skills - thus, you write more freely and more often.
I've been pushing "Oh, Baby, Baby!" the most. It's been workshopped twice, edited, analyzed and re-edited. It's ready, baby! But yet, it's been rejected repeatedly. It's in the hands of yet another publishing house. Please, keep your fingers crossed (anyone reading this) that they'll accept it. I believe that one acceptance letter will jump-start me onto the road of frequent writing. It will be, well, acceptance. Affirmation. An indication that I'm maybe doing the write thing. Sorry, couldn't pass up that pun.
Sat down tonight, with the laptop, started working on Callbacks. Could find NO inspiration. Went instead to Reds' Revenge. Oh, boy, the ideas flow on that one.
Is it unrealistic to write a sequel?

Twice in a day?!

I'm slowly but surely getting the hang of this blogging business. My friend, Merilee, instructed me on how to put pictures with my postings. Ta da! This is from my December trip to the coast.... no I didn't shoot this underwater, it was at an aquarium. But not bad, eh?

Been at rehearsal all evening. Long evening.

Is that a valid reason not to write tonight? I think not.

This blogging gets my mind freed up, gets the tightness loosened. I think blogging might be good for me! And I now have the offer of a friend giving me deadlines. YAY! Every good writer needs deadlines. Okay, so what will I work on tonight? Reds Revenge, You've got Nails, or Callbacks? A glass of wine first.....

Details, details, details

Good morning to you, Mr. Bunny. What kind of plays do I write was your query. Well, for starters I did respond to you by leaving a message on your blog. But as I'm so green at this whole new venture, there's a good possibility my posting was not visible. aaargh.
Details....I write comedies and mysteries. Also have written two musicals - let me rephrase that - two plays with music attached. Am I published? No, but I'm trying to be. Just sent off a script this last week to a publisher. I've got a lovely collection of rejection letters. My writer friends assure me this is to be expected. And I'll keep plugging away.
Right now I have three plays in the works......a sequel of sorts to my Once upon a Palace Purple play/musical ... a sequel that won't have music. A play about the audition process - something I'm all too familiar with, ha! And a play set in a beauty shop.
Have my plays been produced? Yes. I started a theater company for that very purpose.
Now your turn......tell me more about the kinds of plays you write. Give me details, details, details.

Pride and Prejudice

I had good intentions of writing an adaptation of P&P but I think there are some of you out there who are way more qualified to take this on. So....unless I find myself with an inexplicable amount of free time, I'll pass on this and let y'all accomplish a work of brilliance.

I'm stalled.

There are things I should be writing but I'm not facing a deadline so I'm procrastinating. No other writers ever experience that, do they? *Ha!*

Too pretty to be writing today

Okay, day two of blogging. Merilee has kindly given me some tips (thank you, I now know what a 'dashboard' is) and Karin has offered to come over and tutor me. What would I do without friends!
I actually put some thoughts into the computer - thoughts about The Reds' Revenge. I'm not sure it's going to be something that I'll actually finish. More of an amusement to keep me from what I really should be writing. But I like the story so far. We didn't really explore the characters from the Red Kingdom. And I think there's potential there for a full length play. It wouldn't be tied to Palace Purple in case audience members hadn't actually seen that show. (Fools! Where were they?)
Bill is calling me from the back yard. The weather is so lovely today. I need to go out there and clean the patio furniture, just in case we have friends over. Too pretty to be writing today.

Oh, my, I have a blog

I'm a playwright. I love to write plays. Yet I find myself fascinated by my friends' blogs. I read them when I'm feeling lonely and want to electronically connect with someone. I marvel at the creativity involved in their blogs. So, even though I should be writing a play, I decided to investigate starting my own blog. Here it is.
Goodness, what have I done?
I can't even manage my own Facebook account.
My MySpace has been pretty much abandoned.
And yet, here is another thing to keep me from doing what I SHOULD be doing. Writing plays. Ah, well.
